After seeing so "open letters" to best friends, ex boyfriends, fathers, and old teachers, I decided to put my own spin on an open letter to the father who should have stayed away.
Dear "Father",
I am writing you this letter to inform you that even though you've left me in pieces more times than I can count, I will ALWAYS be fine. I will always be able to look at the mistakes that you made raising me and understand what not to do with my children, I see the lack of ability in your heart to feel true compassion and I feel bad for you.
Since you showed me what abandonment looked like I was able to find a love stronger than I knew existed, simply because he stayed.
You gave me false promises, and showed me how to be an honest and true person who is capable of making choices to better my life.
I watched you beat my family, and learned how to stand up for what I believe in, and to recognize the weak man behind the closed fists.
When you drank and you yelled at me until I was in tears, you taught me to never let words roll off of my tongue that cut through people.
When the addictions set in you taught me what a broken person really is, I watched you hurt the people you cared about the most, and that taught me what the important things in life really are.
My point being, is that every last beating, abusive word, stolen memory, and flat out harsh actions that you have showed me in my lifetime, I will always be made stronger from it. I will never give in to you have become and what you have tried to make me.
